Get to Know the Faces behind The Storm 82

Sandi Owens

Chairman of the Board, and President

Sandi Owens lives in Greenfield, Indiana with her husband Brian, their 3 cats and 1 golden retriever. Sandi was blessed to have Walter as a son. She has a doctorate in Organizational Leadership and an MBA in Finance, which definitely helped when dealing with all the paperwork and financial issues that come along with having your son go in for emergency surgery only to find out that he has cancer, and not just any cancer but Glioblastoma, the most deadly form of brain cancer. Walter wanted to hide how bad things were (like brushing off the nausea and pain from getting chemo and radiation at the same time) but, he always knew he could be open with her and she would just listen and encourage. Walter was one of her biggest proponents and was always looking out for his mom. Through his entire 14 month journey dealing with brain cancer the one thing he worried about is that she would turn against God due to this. Walter never turned again God and neither did Sandi. In the famous words of Walter "God is good, please believe, God is good!" And, that is why we started the foundation, because God is good, and there are lots of young men and women who need someone to take a chance on them like Walter did for so many while he was alive.

Coach Brady Gunn

Board Member

Brady Gunn lives in Fort Worth, Texas and is married to Kimberly.  They share a passion for teaching and coaching while both working in education.  Brady has been blessed to coach football for almost 20 years, and loved getting to share all of those seasons with Walter.  Brady was fatefully paired up with Walter as ‘potluck' roommates for their sophomore year of college at ACU.  Their relationship immediately took on a brotherly dynamic and they grew to be the best of friends.  Brady enjoys cultivating relationships that inspire, particularly with those he gets to coach, on and off the field.  Brady credits Walter’s constant advocacy in his life and faithful encouragement to be a large part of who he is today and why he coaches.  Loyal beyond measure, Walter’s words and spirit continue to impact young people indirectly every day through Brady’s coaching.

Coach Joseph "Hoss" Janik

Board Member

After a decorated amateur boxing career, Hoss found his calling on the other side of the ropes. He has slowly become one of the sport’s most respected trainers, with two world champions having come out of KnuckleHeadz. The gym is also home to several other world class boxers and MMA fighters. Hoss said “KnuckleHeadz really is like a family to our members. Whether you’re a world champion or learning to throw a jab, when you’re here, you’re home. That means more to me than any championship or award.” And, this can be seen in how he interacts with his athletes. They are not his students, they are his family as anyone who knew Walter would tell you, Hoss was his mentor, his friend, and his coach. If anything good or bad happened, you know Walter would be on the phone to "Coach" almost immediately.

Michael Ewing

Board Member, and Corporate Secretary

Michael Ewing lives in Nashville, Tennessee and is married to his high school sweetheart, with whom he has two beautiful children.  Michael is a lawyer by trade.  He first became friends with Walter their sophomore year of college at ACU as neighbors in Edwards dormitory.  Coming from very different backgrounds, Walter & Michael connected over many long conversations about faith, what really matters in life, and of course, sports.  Some legendary pranks and hijinks didn't hurt either.  Michael is blessed to have many friends, but he has never had one more fiercely loyal than Walter.
